Linear - Maze EP
Label: Nu Venture Records
Opening the EP is ‘Fundamental Funk’, which begins an evolving journey of funky bass lines and crisp breaks. The playful funky lead persists throughout the intro and the build up. With added vocal samples contributing to the overall texture and filtered bass notes giving a sense of what is to come. The initial drop brings the groove which slowly develops with intricate percussion, before a contrasting switch up midway through, using synth swells, intense hats and quirky textures. After the calm of the break you are thrust back into the excitement of the second drop where the beat plays at half time before dropping back to the standard 174 groove.
‘Maze’ sees Linear at his most experimental yet. This down tempo track takes inspiration from old school garage in its bass lines and featuring constant switches between the deep, rolling and minimal vibes which begins from the drop. Soaring pads which form the intro re-enter for the latter stages of the drop combined with fast intricate percussion and interspersed vocal samples to give this track a real sense of soul.
Completing the EP is ‘Anthem at Dusk’, which brings the tone firmly back to the melodic. The elongated build up is subtle and the layers develop slowly as different melodies arrive across the frequencies. Delicate precision paves the way for the the drop, which maintains the melodic nature of the intro, all perfectly composed alongside powerful bass lines. As this accomplished production progresses, ethereal vocal lines and samples, add to the layered nature of this track to create a soaring soundscape.
