Landing within back catalogues of the drum & bass world’s elite class of record labels, including Noisia’s Invisible Recordings, Shimon’s Audioporn imprint and Jade’s Eatbrain, Bl4ck Owlz have been representing the neurofunk subgenre since 2015. The former duo, now solely run by Vik, has come through fast and hard with an impressive array of releases, the type to firmly place themselves amongst some of the heaviest hitters across his playing field. And he’s here to deliver yet another stunningly aggressive output, one which cuts through with four separate offerings, nodding at what has made the modern neurofunk scene so pivotal to drum & bass.

Due for a release on Optiv’s Redlight Recordings, ‘Under Control’ is the first rendition, which takes a striking turn against its track-title through its slick use of smashing drum peddles and a distorted bassline which runs wild throughout the mix. The control which Bl4ck Owlz could be alluding to is his extravagant hold over the technical dominion layered with stab after stab of striking bass, which builds into an intimidating composition; one showing his production might. Following ‘Under Control’ is the raucous ‘Fonky Technician’, one with a hook that catches you throughout each precisely fashioned segment and proving that the modern tails of drum & bass still flow with the funk which many old-school fans reminisce on.

‘Bl4ck Bee’ kicks into play through its explosion of the all-too familiar sounds of Bl4ck Owlz. It throws you deeper and deeper into its muddy trenches until you’re unable to pull yourself from its crashing sleuths of percussion and tearaway bassline. The infamous dancefloor twist makes itself known throughout each thumping instrumental and it perfectly platforms what Bl4ck Owlz stands for. ‘Organicrime’ is just as forthcoming, pushing forward with an attitude that is unafraid and rockets through with a breakdown which makes an instant connection to both the clubs as well as neurofunk’s consumerbase. It brings an end to the EP, one which is diverse with each record proving to be as intimidating as the last. Serving up a host of striking production levels, Bl4ck Owlz has proven that he’s still an impenetrable force.
