Not many drum & bass artists could get away with dropping a 24-track album in the absence of self-promotion and still succeed; enter Logistics. Slated for 26 March, Logistics delivers his eighth studio album, Earthling, via Hospital Records. As one of the label’s undisputed household names across two decades (and the younger brother of Hospital’s own Nu:Tone), the Cambridge-based drum & bass producer has nothing to prove - but everything to give.Spanning 24 tracks, Earthling honours the contributions Logistics has so generously offered to the imprint, oozing the kind of soulful drum & bass that harks back to the foundations of the label in ‘96 - fittingly in the midst of 30-year celebrations. In a world of short-form content designed to feed the algorithm, Logistics has chosen the path less travelled. Upholding a mysterious digital aura and letting the music speak for itself, Logistics has remained one of Hospital’s most prolific producers - signing exclusively in 2004. Stumbling upon Logistics’ discography served as a defining moment for D&B listeners in the UK and beyond - the mastermind behind such records as ‘Jungle Music’ (2009), ‘Together’ (2004) and ‘Wanderlust’ (2014) that represent both a genre and an entire era of UK dance music. It’s this versatility that makes Logistics so special. A delicate dance between nostalgia and experimentation, Earthling features more live instrumentation and studio experimentation than ever before, giving the producer a newfound level of artistic freedom. With a stellar bank of collaborators and vocalists across its tracklist - Charlotte X, Emilie Rachel, India Shan and Kate McGill, the project champions creativity, inviting a cohort of cutting-edge tastemakers to help shape a world that stands as a testament to Logistic’s curatorial ear.Across 24 tracks, it’s difficult to pinpoint a favourite - the lead single ‘Composure’ sees a never-before-seen link-up for Charlotte X and Logistics. Landing 27 February ahead of the full album, ‘Composure’ is both a love letter to the liquid sound that defined Hospital for so many years, and a welcomed return for Logistics. The album’s focus track ‘Phase’ is texturally rich, where trademark vocal chops flutter over a rumbling bassline. Sprinkled with light hats and crispy percussion, it’s textbook Logistics in the best way - airiness coinciding with technical precision. The title track ‘Earthling’ stresses classic D&B breaks, setting the scene for the entirety of the album. With retro synths and 80s influence, it sounds like the beginning of an enchanted quest - honing traditional Logistics flavour whilst tapping into that new-school energy the label continues to deliver. At its core, Earthling is a manifestation of authenticity. Widely recognised for bridging the gap between liquid funk and a more dance-floor orientated variety of drum & bass, Logistics has remained a proponent of imagination - simultaneously co-signing multiple D&B niches and drawing further inspiration from beyond the genre. The album gives listeners a glimpse into Logistic’s fascinating genius - one that makes music that sits comfortably in the space between, rather than pigeonholed and forced to adapt. Logistics has been around the block more than a few times - and with the release of his eighth full-length project, illustrates how he continues to be a defining voice within drum & bass; a well-deserved and befitting slot amidst Hospital’s stacked 30-year commemoration.
