Famed for their flawless production, light-hearted vibe and sonic skills are our favourite Finnish duo Juho Kavasto and Sainey Gibba, better known as Askel and Elere. They delivered their debut album ‘Simulations’ - a masterclass in sci-fi liquid - back in 2021, and since then have been fine-tuning their output with a slew of VIPs and remixes. Now we welcome them back to Soulvent with their first EP since 2020’s ‘Glass’.
Opener ‘Common Snipe’ is a ball of understated energy, featuring wildlife commentary by way of sampling, uplifting pads, wonderful use of distortion and boundless bassline. This one rolls out exquisitely, with progressive percussion, big boy drum fills and cleverly placed automation.
Kicking straight off with YENIAS soft vocals, ‘The Light Feels Low’ is a playground of warming bassline, crisp purposeful drums and ethereal vocal chops. The carefully constructed harmony of the track develops from melancholy, to triumph, with soaring bassline glides, encompassing both the agony and the ecstasy.
In possibly the most meta-track to see release on the label in a hot-moment, ‘Space Dub’ rather ironically makes light of just how daunting space in a track can truly be, by way of one Jonny Mitekiss, only further supported by one Jon GLXY. Sonically, you can expect everything you’ve come to know and love from the Finns - raw-distorted basslines, boundless energy, and a sense of not really taking anything in life too seriously.
Finally ‘Step In’ kicks off with punchy drums and de-tuned piano that cuts through the eerie atmospherics. The vocal sample you hear is taken from a Hip-Hop track bigging up the pair’s hometown Helsinki. The boisterous bassline that kicks in from the drop will have you bouncing whilst you’re giving credit to the city you’re reppin’. Bonus points for those that can pick out the sampling of the London Underground and Helsinki Metro throughout the track!
